There were many in the reformation of the European church that knew there was a need to separate the church and the state. The worked to achieve this in Europe only to get themselves burned at the stake by both Protestants and Catholics. The knew that the combination of church and state always led to the corruption of the church. They are called radical reformers but in truth they were the faithful reformers. We owe these women and men a great deal. So much of what they did has healed the church and help our nation be a land of the free. Here in America they were able to achieve their goal and opened the door for man and women to worship God according to their conscience.
